The Krimgold Park Native Plant Garden (NPG) is located in the southeast end of the Park, just west of Pond 3. It contains over three dozen clearly labeled native plant species. The NPG is maintained by the Friends of Krimgold Park in cooperation with the Carroll County Master Gardeners, who demonstrate proper plant selection and planting techniques. Volunteers weed the NPG on the second Saturday of the month, February through November.
Following is a list of the plants and their locations within the garden:
After the opening of Krimgold Park in 2015, the “Weed Warriors,” as they were known in 2017, cleared two areas near the southeast pond for a Native Plant Garden. These warriors, led by Master Gardener John Hubbs, received a grant for native plantings from the Maryland Urban & Community Forest Council (MUCFC). In 2018, the warriors were sponsored by the Freedom Area Recreation Council to establish the "Friends of Krimgold Park." In April of 2019, the Friends received the MUCFC Bronze Award for native plantings. Later that same year, an annual budget submittal was initiated to the Maryland Master Gardeners. Carroll County Master Gardeners held their first Earth Day event at Krimgold Park in April 2022. In November of that year, the garden was approved as a Monarch Waystation by MonarchWatch.org. In October 2024, the Maryland Recreation & Parks Association awarded the Friends of Krimgold Park their Outstanding Community Organization Award. The Native Plant Garden continues to thrive, with Master Gardeners and community volunteers working together most recently to install a new wood border around the garden in 2025 that was donated by the Eldersburg Home Depot. Thank you for visiting and please return throughout the seasons.
